What stories do you tell yourself about yourself?

Sep 18, 2026

Here are some of mine:

I do not have enough money to do what I want to do!

I don’t have enough energy!

I don’t have enough motivation!

I don’t have enough interesting purposeful things to do!

I have too much to do!

What if you try an experiment with one of your stories – when you notice that you are thinking and rethinking and extending some version of a story, stop for a moment and notice what is here. Maybe there is an emotion, like fear. Maybe there is nothing. Maybe there is peace. Maybe there is .........

You might also notice what makes the story seem more real? Maybe it seems more real when we really get into the thinking about it, analysing and coming up with more reasons to support the story.

Sometimes the more we talk to other people about these stories the more entrenched they become – have you noticed that the story gets more involved after talking to others? Our thinking can extend on what others have said and get more complicated.

Do you want to believe the story is real? Is there a purpose in delving into the story? Does it do something for you? I suspect that for me, my mind is trying to get to all the possibilities so I can sieve them and find something that would ease me.

Does it work! No!

There is another option................leave the story in the thoughts and leave it be. In other words, don’t try to stop it. Well, of course you won’t want to stop it, if you believe it. But if you suspect that it is not serving you, that it is getting in the way of what you truly want, stop focusing on it and let it be. Let it happen without giving it attention.

This can seem counter intuitive to our mind because if it is not serving, then of course we want to get rid of it. But our mind will do what minds do, that is, come up with stories. So let it carry on without getting involved.

Sometimes I think that my mind is like a young child needing attention and coming up with stories to get it. And if I don’t give it attention, then the story fades.

So my suggestion is to focus on what you want. And let the ideas arise, rather that try to work out how. There is an infinite source in you that can come up with all sorts of things whereas the mind can be limiting where we organize it or try to control it.

What do I want? In this moment I want to be here, in the depths of my being, in the silence and truth.

What do you want?

Can we work on this together? Stories and what you want?
